The power of the Life Sciences & Health industry in Brabant
- The fact that the entire value chain is present, from R&D through to production and logistics;
- the distinctive cooperative model that exists between universities, companies, and public agencies;
- the favorable location within Europe;
- the high quality manufacturing industry focused on Biopharma and MedTech;
- the Pivot Park and High Tech Campus campuses;
- the knowledge institutes TU Eindhoven, Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen, Holst Centre, and JADS;
- the MedTech cluster surrounding Philips.
Life Sciences & Health is one of the Netherlands' priority industries. It's production value is in the region of ten billion euros, half of which is thanks to the province of Brabant. There are 910 national and international companies in the province, employing 18,160 people, all working on better and affordable healthcare. Aside from well-known companies such as Philips and MSD there are hundreds of other companies active in MedTech, pharmaceuticals, specialist logistics, and many other fields.
Pivot Park biopharmaceutical research campus
Biotech research & development is growing at a rapid pace in the region, with the number of companies increasing by 43 percent and jobs tripling since 2014. This growth is largely due to the success of Brabant's biopharmaceutical research campus, Pivot Park and the neighboring MSD (Merck) Pharmaceutical Operations and Biologicals and Aspen facilities. Over the space of seven years, Pivot Park, building on the foundations laid by Organon Research, has grown to become home to 60 biopharmaceutical research companies and research institutes employing close to 600 people. It recently gave Oss the nickname the Dutch vaccination capital, thanks to the crucial role the former MSD campus is playing in the fight against the coronavirus.
Brainport's MedTech Cluster
Medical technology is a global market worth some 500 million euros, a figure that is expected to double over the next five years. Brainport Eindhoven is a crucial hub in the world of medical technology, with 55 percent (183) of the 330 MedTech companies based in the Brainport Eindhoven region, while the remaining 45 percent (147) are in the rest of the province. Over a hundred companies originated in the chain of complex machinery used in the manufacturing industry or are the direct descendants of the innovative muscle of Philips, the Holst Centre, or TU/e. The High Tech Campus is a very popular base for MedTech startups.
Brainport Development, BOM, and Rabobank will tackle these challenges with the joint ambition to strengthen the MedTech sector in Brabant and Brainport. On this website, you can read more about the research and the five challenges.
